AGA Reports Highest Annual US Gambling Revenue in 2023
According to the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker, the total revenue of US gambling market hit an annual high in 2023. The industry reached $66.5bn that is 10% higher than a 2022’s record of $60.5bn.
The full-year performance was mostly boosted by record quarterly revenue of $17.4bn in Q4 with $6.2bn generated in December alone, which was the most profitable month in the industry’s history.
If we take a closer look at separate gambling segments, we’ll see the following financial results in 2023:
- Slots and table games at land-based casinos generated $49.4bn of revenue, which is 3.3% higher compared to the 2022’s result.
- Sportsbook revenue showed a 44.5% increase with $10.9bn collected in 2023.
- iGaming revenue of $6.2bn was up 22.9% on yearly basis.
Of 20 top commercial casinos across the US, 12 reported revenue growth in 2023 with the strongest results coming from the Las Vegas Strip.
As for the tax contribution, it also rose to new heights as over the previous year state and local government’s coffers collected nearly $14.4bn in direct gaming revenue taxes. This data does not include billions of dollars contributed in the form of income, sales, payroll and many other corporate taxes.
Bill Miller, AGA president and CEO, noted that sustaining their momentum would take unified industry efforts around combating pernicious illegal operators and growing responsible gambling efforts in tandem with the growth of the legal market — both of which the American Gaming Association’s committed to lead on throughout 2024. He added that gaming’s success translated directly to the success of the states, cities and towns in which they operated. Miller also said that they were proud to be in 47 US jurisdictions, acting as economic drivers, creating jobs and providing the funding that makes critical public education programs, infrastructure projects, problem gambling resources and more possible.
