Resorts World New York City to Spend 5 Billion on Redevelopment in Pursuit of Casino License
A Queens-based casino Resorts World New York City (RWNYC) is ready to spend $5 billion on redevelopment to become a “world-class” entertainment resort. The project includes a Las Vegas-style casino, 3,000 units of employee housing, 1,600 new hotel rooms, a 7,000-seat performance space as well as retail spaces.
However, these plans will only come true if RWNYC receives one of the three available casino licenses from the New York State Gaming Commission. Although the property already offers slot machines and accepts wagers on horse racing, a full-fledged license is necessary to host table games in the casino.
Resorts World New York City is operated by Genting Americas East, a member of the Genting Group. President of Genting Americas East Robert DeSalvio said that they’re proud to have grown with the Queens community for over a decade. He added that when they stood there more than a dozen years ago to break ground on Resorts World New York City, their vision extended well beyond that already-ambitious original plan, and that vision can soon become reality.
If the project moves forward, the development would increase a total workforce to 5,000 permanent union jobs. Besides, the same number of construction jobs is expected to be created as the casino floor is planned to be expanded to 350,000 square feet.
Taking into account interests of the surrounding community, Resorts World New York City’s proposal includes more than 10 acres of publicly-accessible greenspace, a ballroom, large scale meeting rooms, and conference spaces. Betty Braton, Chair of Queens Community Board 10, said that RWNYC came into their community more than a dozen years ago, and every day since has been a dedicated neighbor who showed up, heard their feedback, and responded to their needs.
